Welcome to Dromore Woodland Nature Reserve, a picturesque area spanning approximately 400 hectares in the southeastern part of the Burren region, County Clare. Owned by the Irish State, this nature reserve was established in 1985 due to its remarkable diversity of flora and fauna. With its varied habitat types, including a river, lakes, turloughs, callows, limestone pavement, fen peat, reed beds, and lush woodlands, the reserve is a haven for rich biodiversity.

Aside from its natural wonders, Dromore Woodland Nature Reserve boasts fascinating historical and archaeological sites. Explore the remains of the 17th-century O’Brien Castle, majestically standing by the serene lakeside. Discover the sites of Cahermacrea Castle, Kilakee Church, two ring forts, and a lime kiln, offering glimpses into the area’s storied past.

Within the woodland, you’ll find two self-guided nature trails, each taking approximately one hour to complete. To help navigate, a map will be available, ensuring you don’t miss any of the highlights. Additionally, a section of the renowned 140km Mid-Clare Way passes through the reserve, offering a longer adventure for those seeking a more extensive exploration. The loop trail intersects with the Castle Nature Trail and the Mid-Clare Way, commencing at the main car park. During the summer months, an Information Centre is open from June to September to provide further assistance and guidance.

To reach the trailhead, start from the village of Ruan, which is approximately 10km northwest of Ennis town. From there, follow the signposts towards Dromore Woodland Nature Reserve, located just 2km away. The trailhead is easily accessible and well-marked.

Here’s a breakdown of the trail directions:

A-B: Begin at the car park and follow the purple National Loop arrow, along with the yellow arrows and trekking man logo for the Mid-Clare Way. Pass by the ruins of Killakee Church as you venture into the woodland.

B-C: Continue along the main roadway, veering right towards the entrance before turning left into the woodland just before the exit. You will deviate from the Mid-Clare Way here. Meander through the woodland parallel to the boundary wall until you reach a sandy laneway, where you turn left.

C-D: Rejoin the Mid-Clare Way, following the wooded edge of the reserve for nearly 1km. Depart from the Mid-Clare Way once again to follow the Castle Nature Trail, one of the established loop walks within the reserve.

D-E: Embark on a 1km section of the loop that leads you to the picturesque shores of Lough Garr and Dromore Lough. Afterwards, rejoin the Mid-Clare Way for the final section back to the trailhead.

E-A: The last 400m of the loop takes you past the impressive O’Brien Castle and along a boardwalk that leads back to the trailhead, completing the journey.

As you explore Dromore Woodland Nature Reserve, soak in the breathtaking scenery, immerse yourself in history, and savour the tranquillity of this remarkable woodland walk.
