Explore Clare – Great Days Out Itinerary
Route: Ennis – Ennistymon – Lahinch– Ennis
From Ennis to Lahinch – Sea Air, Beach and Atlantic Waves
Start & Finish: Ennis
Duration: Half Day to Full Day (4–6 hours, excluding optional diversion)
Morning
Leave Ennis and follow the N85 west towards the coast — a straight, easy drive of about 35 minutes (35 km) through open countryside and the colourful market town of Ennistymon.
Ennistymon is a lovely place to pause — known for its boutique shopping, vintage finds, and vibrant street life. Stop at Byrnes Restaurant, Bar Café and Vintage Store, where you can relax over coffee or lunch, while taking in the stunning views of the cascades on the River Inagh. Just across the street, explore the small independent shops and galleries that give this town its creative charm.
Continue on to Lahinch, a family favourite seaside town. Stroll the promenade beside the sweeping sandy beach, take a swim, build sandcastles, or join a surf lesson with one of the local surf schools.
If the weather isn’t beach-friendly, the Lahinch Leisure Centre offers an excellent indoor pool, gym, and fitness facilities overlooking the sea — perfect for all-weather family fun.
For lunch or coffee, there are plenty of welcoming spots along the seafront and in the town — from Joe’s Café to Randaddy’s, both with views of the bay. Vaughan’s on the Prom is a great choice for its award-winning fish and chips, while Spoonies Ice Cream is a local favourite for a sweet seaside treat. Afterwards, take a little time to browse the town’s boutiques and surf shops before heading back inland.
A Great Optional Diversion – Cliffs of Moher
If you have time, continue about 15 minutes (12 km) north to the Cliffs of Moher Vistor Experience, one of Ireland’s most famous natural landmarks. The visitor centre, viewing platforms, and cliff-top trail offer unforgettable stunning views of the Atlantic. Allow up to 2 hours.
Note: Early morning or late afternoon visits to the Cliffs of Moher are best, as traffic and parking can be busy — especially in high season. You might even start your day here and explore Lahinch and Ennistymon on the return journey.
Return Journey
Retrace your route via Ennistymon. If you haven’t stopped on the outward journey, take time here to browse the shops or enjoy a relaxed coffee or meal overlooking the cascades at Byrnes Restaurant and Bar Café before returning to Ennis.
TIP: Always check opening hours, booking requirements, and tour times before setting out, as they can vary by season and weather.
Travel Kindly, Don’t Rush Clare
Clare rewards those who travel slowly. Let the landscape set your pace — pause, breathe, and notice what’s around you. Take your time and tread lightly. Walk when you can, support local, and leave every place as beautiful as you found it. If the day feels full, shorten your journey — Clare is best enjoyed unhurried.
