Explore Clare – Great Days Out Itinerary

Route:  Ennis – Kilkee – Kilrush– Ennis

From Ennis to Kilkee – Sea Cliffs, Beach and Family Fun

Start & Finish: Ennis
Duration: Full Day (4–6 hours)

Morning

Leave Ennis and follow the N68 towards the coast — a scenic drive of about 1 hour (60 km) through rolling countryside and small West Clare villages.

Arrive in Kilkee, one of Ireland’s best-loved family seaside resorts, famed for its sheltered bay, wide sandy beach, and strong sea-swimming tradition. Stroll the promenade, enjoy the fresh Atlantic air, or take a dip in the safe, Blue Flag waters.

At low tide, explore the famous Pollock Holes, a series of large natural rock pools that fill with seawater as the tide recedes. These tidal pools, refreshed twice daily by the Atlantic, are crystal clear and teeming with marine life — a natural open-air swimming spot that’s been a Kilkee tradition for generations. Always check tide times and swim only when lifeguards are on duty.

For those seeking adventure, try Nevsail Watersports and Adventures, offering kayaking, paddle-boarding and more — all within the natural embrace of Kilkee Bay. Remember to check what’s available and book ahead.

For an all-weather experience, visit the Kilkee Waterworld, an indoor aquatic centre overlooking the bay with pools, slides, and a lazy river — a fun choice for families on days when the weather turns wild.

If travelling as an adult party, enjoy the spectacular Kilkee Cliff Walk, starting from the Diamond Rocks Café and following the dramatic coastline above the Atlantic. The views are breathtaking, but the terrain is uneven and exposed, and strong winds are common, so this route is not suited to children or anyone unsteady on their feet. Allow 1–1.5 hours if walking the full circuit.

Afternoon and Return Journey

There’s no shortage of places for lunch or coffee in Kilkee. Diamond Rocks Café overlooks the sea and cliffs, while Hickie’s Bar and Naughton’s in the town centre are long-time favourites for relaxed dining and local dishes. After lunch, take a gentle stroll through town and enjoy its vintage seaside charm — a place where generations of families have come to swim, picnic, and unwind.

On your way back to Ennis, stop in Kilrush, a heritage town on the Shannon Estuary about 25 minutes from Kilkee. Wander the Marina or visit the beautifully restored Vandeleur Walled Garden & Visitor Centre, where you can enjoy coffee or cake in the garden café and browse local crafts.

Allow at least 60 to 90 minutes in Kilrush before completing your journey back to Ennis (approx. another 50 minutes).

TIP: Always check opening hours, booking requirements, before setting out, as they can vary by season and weather.

Travel Kindly, Don’t Rush Clare

Clare rewards those who travel slowly. Let the landscape set your pace — pause, breathe, and notice what’s around you. Take your time and tread lightly. Walk when you can, support local, and leave every place as beautiful as you found it. If the day feels full, shorten your journey — Clare is best enjoyed unhurried.
