Explore Clare – Great Days Out Itinerary
Route: Ennis–Spanish Point–Ennis
From Ennis to Spanish Point – Sea Breezes, Beach, and Surf
Start & Finish: Ennis
Duration: Half Day to Full Day (4–6 hours)
Morning
Leave Ennis and follow the N85 towards the coast, continuing on the N67 through Inagh and Miltown Malbay — a scenic drive of around 45 minutes (45 km).
Arrive at Spanish Point, a Blue Flag beach and a favourite with families. This long, golden sweep of sand faces the open Atlantic, sheltered by grassy dunes and framed by low cliffs. It’s one of Clare’s most peaceful seaside settings — perfect for swimming, walking barefoot on the sand, breathing in the salt air, or watching (or joining) surfers ride the rolling waves.
The name Spanish Point recalls a dramatic chapter in history: in 1588, ships from the Spanish Armada were wrecked off this coast, and the area still carries that story in its name and lore.
Today, it’s a place of gentle energy and community. If you’re an early riser, you can join the Spanish Point Swimmers, a friendly local group who welcome newcomers for a morning dip at dawn — a joyful tradition that celebrates the sea in every season. Surf lessons are also available locally, with boards and wetsuits provided.
Coffee, Lunch & Views
When it’s time to warm up or take a break, the Armada Hotel is the heart of Spanish Point — perched above the bay with panoramic ocean views. From relaxed coffee and home baking to leisurely lunches or a seafood meal showcasing local produce, it’s a place where good food meets great scenery. Whether you sit by the window or out on the terrace, the view of the Atlantic is never far away.
Return Journey
When you’re ready, retrace your route to Ennis, perhaps pausing in Miltown Malbay to browse the shops or reflect on the town’s musical heritage — home of the famous Willie Clancy Summer School.
Safety Tip: Always check surf and tide conditions before swimming or surfing, and be mindful of changing weather and sea currents.
TIP: Always check surf lesson booking requirements, before setting out.
Travel Kindly, Don’t Rush Clare
Clare rewards those who travel slowly. Let the landscape set your pace — pause, breathe, and notice what’s around you. Take your time and tread lightly. Walk when you can, support local, and leave every place as beautiful as you found it. If the day feels full, shorten your journey — Clare is best enjoyed unhurried.
