Explore Clare – Great Days Out Itinerary
Route: Ennis – Doolin
From Ennis to Doolin – Caves, Cliffs, Coast, and Coastal Charm
Start & Finish: Ennis
Duration: Full Day (6 – 8 hours)
Morning
Leave Ennis and take the R476 north through Corofin and Kilfenora, travelling through rolling farmland and the limestone landscapes of the Burren.
In Kilfenora, known as the City of the Crosses, you can stop briefly to see the ancient Kilfenora Cathedral and its impressive High Crosses. Right beside it, the Burren Centre offers a fascinating introduction to the geology, archaeology, and culture of this unique region — ideal if you want context before exploring further. (Allow 30–45 minutes if you choose to stop.)
Continue on the R476 to Lisdoonvarna, Ireland’s famous matchmaking town, where you might like to visit the Burren Smokehouse — known for its award-winning smoked salmon, tastings, and engaging visitor experience that tells the story of sustainable Irish food traditions. (Allow 30–45 minutes if you plan to visit.)
From Lisdoonvarna, follow the R479 west for 10 minutes to Doolin, where the Burren meets the Atlantic.
Lunch & Leisure by the Coast
Arrive in Doolin, a village celebrated for its traditional music, sea views, and coastal charm. For lunch, choose from welcoming pubs and cafés serving everything from seafood chowder to home baking. Gus O’Connor’s Pub is a Doolin favourite, while smaller cafés nearby offer lighter bites and excellent coffee.
After lunch, enjoy a relaxed walk along Doolin Pier, where ferries and fishing boats gather beneath the cliffs. The pier offers fresh Atlantic air, beautiful views, and a front-row seat to the Cliffs of Moher rising in the distance.
Afternoon Options
Spend the afternoon as you please — Doolin offers a range of relaxed experiences depending on your interests and the weather:
- Explore Doolin Village – Visit craft shops, browse local art, or simply enjoy a coffee overlooking the sea.
- Cliffs of Moher Cruise with Doolin Ferry – Sail beneath the towering cliffs for a spectacular perspective from sea level. (Allow 1 hour; seasonal and weather-dependent.)
- Tour the nearby Doolin Cave –see Europe’s largest free-hanging stalactite on a guided tour deep beneath the Burren. (Allow 45 minutes.)
Each experience can comfortably fill most of the afternoon; choose one or two for an unhurried day.
A Note on the Aran Islands
Doolin Pier is also the gateway to the Aran Islands, with ferries to Inis Oírr (Inisheer), Inis Meáin (Inishmaan), and Inis Mór (Inishmore). A visit to the islands is one of Ireland’s most memorable experiences but is best enjoyed as a full-day trip of its own.(Ferry crossings depend on weather and sea conditions, and pre-booking is essential. See Doolin Ferry.
Return Journey
When ready, retrace your route to Ennis via Lisdoonvarna, Kilfenora, and Corofin, enjoying the inland beauty of the Burren along the way. The drive takes around 45–50 minutes, depending on stops.
Tip: Coastal weather can change quickly — bring layers, comfortable footwear, and always check local conditions before setting out.
TIP: Always check opening hours, booking requirements for ferries and tours, before setting out, as they can vary by season and weather.
Travel Kindly, Don’t Rush Clare
Clare rewards those who travel slowly. Let the landscape set your pace — pause, breathe, and notice what’s around you. Take your time and tread lightly. Walk when you can, support local, and leave every place as beautiful as you found it. If the day feels full, shorten your journey — Clare is best enjoyed unhurried.
