Explore Clare – Great Days Out Itinerary

Route: Ennis – Bunratty – Shannon – Ennis

A Journey Through Clare’s Past

Start & Finish: Ennis
Duration: Full Day (5 to 7 hours, excluding meals)

Morning

Leave Ennis and take the short 20-minute drive to Bunratty Castle & Folk Park. Climb the towers of the famous 15th-century castle and wander through the folk park where traditional cottages, village streets, and costumed characters bring Ireland’s past to life. Allow 2–3 hours for the full experience.

While you’re there, take time to browse the craft and gift shops within the folk park, pause for a treat in the traditional tearooms, or cross the road to Bunratty Village Mills and Meadows & Byrne for Irish design, homeware, and gifts. Right beside the castle stands Durty Nelly’s, the legendary inn that has been part of Bunratty’s story for centuries.

If time permits, detour just 10 minutes away to the Shannon Aviation Museum, with interactive exhibits and a flight simulator that’s a real highlight for aviation fans. Allow 45 minutes.

Lunch in Ennis

Return to Ennis (20 minutes) for lunch. The town has plenty of options, from pubs and cafés to hotel dining. A few favourites include Brogans, The Town Hall, Preachers, and the Old Ground. See the range of dining options, view dining in Clare and filter by Ennis.

Afternoon

Start with a visit to the Clare Museum (free admission, allow 45 minutes), where artefacts and stories trace 6,000 years of local history.

Then step inside Ennis Friary (allow 45–60 minutes), founded in the 13th century by the O’Briens of Thomond. Its stone carvings and cloisters are a fascinating glimpse into Clare’s medieval story.

Round off your afternoon by wandering the quaint medieval streets of Ennis, where you’ll find boutique shops, welcoming cafés, and the town’s sculpture trail bringing art and history together. Allow 1–2 hours depending on your pace.

End of Journey

Your loop finishes back in Ennis — the perfect point to return to your accommodation or set off on your onward journey.

IMPORTANT: Always check opening hours and whether booking is required before setting out, as times can vary by day of week and by season.

Travel Kindly, Don’t Rush Clare

Clare rewards those who travel slowly. Let the landscape set your pace — pause, breathe, and notice what’s around you. Take your time and tread lightly. Walk when you can, support local, and leave every place as beautiful as you found it. If the day feels full, shorten your journey — Clare is best enjoyed unhurried.
